Tobias Fuhr and Tomas Kupka from Finepower presented the latest developments in the field of EV Onboard-Chargers during the 20th Conference on Electric Power Engineering (EPE):
The current market of low and middle power battery charging power converters is mainly based on two-stage concepts combining PFC and DC/DC converter. The efficiency and power density of those systems are being improved by newer semiconductor technology with higher switching frequency and reduced appearance of switching losses. Adverserly newer transistors represent a significant share of device cost and have a negative impact on total cost in case of a sole transistor exchange. The paper describes a perspective way how to minimize the dimension and optimize cost of isolated AC/DC converters by adapting to modern topologies.
